Mortal Kombat
Does anyone remember playing Mortal Kombat as a child? Man, I used to LOVE that video game. I remember the arcade version of it used to be at the cinema in Invercargill, so whenever us rats were well behaved enough to be treated to the movies we would play Mortal Kombat for hours. Now, my arcade gaming style is what I like to call “the thrasher” - I thrash all of the buttons at once,...

The "Other" Dunedin →
I am sure you can imagine my excitment when I discovered the above group on Facebook! It seems that I am not the only person who is interested in exploring another side of Dunedin. A Facebook group could perhaps allow more interaction than a blog which I think is great, so I will watch this space with interest….

So Long, Farewell....
Last Friday afternoon at 4pm I handed in my last ever university assignment. The assignment was yet another one of those ”start-the-day-before, junked-up-on-caffeine, all nighter” jobs which is typical of my uni career but none-the-less I managed to get it done and was reasonably happy with the result. When I think about it, the essay was more than just a piece of work, it was actually...

Made In China
So local heavy rock boys Made In China are currently on their second National Tour for the year! Was stoked to catch them at Pint Night a couple of weeks ago before they once again went on the road. They smashed out some new tracks (presumably material which will be used for their full-length album which has been in the pipe line for the past few months), some old tracks (some from their Heavy Low...

Clothing drop
If you have any old clothes lying about, (or some new ones which you are willing to part ways with) then take them along to 33 Hyde St. The purpose of this “clothing drop” is for people to band together and help those in need.. namely the victims of the Tsunami in Samoa. So c’mon people, gather your things for those in less fortunate situations than our own, and help make the...

Off The Cuff- Live Music Show →
The aim of the “Off the Cuff” music show is to provide a documented space for musicians to do a live performance where ever they feel comfortable, no host, no agenda, just creative people left to do what they do best- create. (Check facebook link above for details). This project reminds me a lot of the music series “Live from Abbey Road” that used to be on Rialto, which...

Left or Right NZ Domination in Progress
To be totally honest, I was incredibly nervous about listening to Left or Right’s ”Nuggety” album for the first time. The reason being; I wondered whether a band with such a unique raw edge and energy in their live shows, was going to be able to capture this honesty in their recording.  For me, there is nothing worse than loving a bands live feel and finally getting your hands...

Dunedin Street Art →
This is an excellent site that I am glad to have stumbled upon recently. The site is dedicated to the artists who warm the streets of Dunedin with their creative brilliance. I particularly liked the website owners “about” statement which is as follows; “Viewing a familiar place through a camera opens your eyes to much that you have never seen before. A second take… ...

Wonderful world of technology..
So incase you didn’t know RSS is the place to go if you want to subscribe to feeds from this blog (or any other for that matter). I’m not sure whether this is common knowledge in the “blogosphere” but a valuable piece of information that I took from my ePolitics lecture a few days ago. If you subscribe; then updates from the blog appear under “feeds” in your...

Is it too late to apo-lo-giise?
Garrrr!!! I knew that I would get useless at this. After falling off the horse, I have found it very difficult to put together a post so I thought the best way to get back on the horse is ala stream of consciousness. There have been so many amazing gigs, and events going on in Dunedin, so I thought that I would just name them; and write about some of them soon (promise!) Feastock Fest! - 10...

Broad Bay China
Far beyond the scarfie streets of Dunedin, hides a small place called Broad Bay, which is home to the Broad Bay China Shop. The shop, is the result of a spiralling China addiction, and has been open for around 9years. Sue, the owner, has been personally collecting China for about 12 years. The shop itself is difficult to describe. It is a cottage filled with China and much more; tea cups, tea...

Human Rights Film Festival, and some extras!
So, it has been a while since I updated this- I KNEW i would be useless!! The past month in Dunedin has been great with graduations, and lots of gigs thanks to New Zealand music month- all of which I will get around to writing about shortly. Onto the now- Starting tonight in Dunedin is the Human Rights Film Festival. The festival showcases a number of films, which touch on various human rights...

The human condition
Here’s a link to something that has restored my faith in the human condition. While technically NOT a squash case, it is very very similar to the antique squash cases of this time.. Now, I have been wanting one of these for a while. I have searched trade me, E-bay, local op-shops, the lot and have been unsuccessful in my hunt. UNTIL… The other night, I get a phone call from a friend....

Gender and the Media
In my gender and the media class today, we learnt that over 90% of music ventures in the U.S. are financial failures. The success of the other 10%, (largely through the four major record labels Sony Music Entertainment, EMI, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group) is so massive, that this is what keeps the music industry alive (financially viable.) This then forces that other 90% to either,...

Lomography
So here’s some exciting news! Last night, I re-discovered an old Lomo camera that was given to my sister a couple of years ago (see right). The camera itself has 8 different lenses so it takes 8 sequential photos each time you use it!! Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a flash, but that is just a minor detail. Here’s a link of some pics from a simliar 4 lens camera from the lomo...

Dunedin kicking off NZ Music month with a bang.
I love Dunedin music, and with this weekend being the start of NZ music month the town seems to be buzzing. Firstly; this weekend marks the beginning of the ‘On the Horizon-Pages from Dunedin’ album release and tour which I am very excited about. The Pages from Dunedin concept is the brain child of a local musician Alastair Burns, and the album features a compilation of tracks from 17...
